The Author Photo That Belongs on a Dust Jacket

Your reader picks up your book, flips it over, and looks at your face. That photo shapes how they read every word inside. It tells them whether you're serious or playful, academic or accessible, emerging or established. We make author portraits that match the weight of what you've written.

Your Author Photo Does More Than You Think

It's not vanity. Your headshot is a marketing asset that follows your book, your byline, and your speaking career for years.

01

It Lives on Your Book — Forever

Your back cover photo is printed thousands of times and doesn't get updated. Unlike a LinkedIn photo you can swap out tomorrow, a book jacket photo is permanent. Readers in airports, bookstores, and libraries will see this image for the life of the print run. It has to hold up.

02

Publishers and Agents Expect Quality

When you submit to agents or publishers, your author photo is part of the package. A phone selfie next to a polished manuscript sends mixed signals. A professional portrait tells them you understand how the industry works and you're ready for the next step.

03

Speaking Gigs, Press, and Podcasts

Conference organizers, podcast hosts, and journalists all need a headshot before they feature you. If you don't have one ready to send, you miss the window. One good photo covers your Amazon author page, Goodreads profile, event flyers, and media kit.

Questions From Authors

What should an author wear for a headshot?

It depends on your genre and your audience. Literary fiction and nonfiction authors tend to dress in refined, muted tones — think dark knits, structured jackets, no busy patterns. Self-help and business authors often go slightly more polished. Children's book authors can be more playful. We'll discuss this before the session and help you plan.

Should my author photo look formal or casual?

Match the tone of your work. A thriller writer doesn't need the same portrait as a wellness coach. We shoot a range during each session — from clean and editorial to warmer and more relaxed — so you can choose what fits after seeing the results side by side.

Will the photo work for my book jacket and Amazon?

We deliver high-resolution files suitable for print reproduction at any size — dust jackets, posters, bookstore displays. We also provide web-optimized versions for Amazon Author Central, Goodreads, your publisher's website, and social media profiles.

I'm self-publishing. Do I still need a professional author photo?

Especially if you're self-publishing. Traditional publishers handle a lot of the visual branding for you. When you're doing it yourself, every detail — cover design, interior layout, and author photo — contributes to whether readers take your book seriously. A professional headshot is one of the easiest ways to signal quality.

How much does an author headshot cost?

Our headshot sessions start at $249 and include studio time, posing direction, multiple backgrounds, same-day proofing, and retouched final images. Most authors book our standard package, which covers everything needed for both print and digital use.
